Happy 2021. We made it! I know in the past I've be Happy 2021. We made it! I know in the past I've been guilty of the "new year, new you" messaging. And what's not to love, we all want a clean slate, especially after this past year. ✨✨✨ But you know what, not this year. This year I'm not changing a g✨d, d✨mn thing. Because if I got through last year with a deeper sense of love in my heart, a peace in my being, and more profound connection to myself, others and the divine than I ever knew possible, then I'm doing just fine. ✨✨✨ This year, I'm taking my cues from the sun. Along with my sisters, I wanted to thank everyone Along with my sisters, I wanted to thank everyone for their love, support, and condolences over these last 6 weeks. Yep, 6 weeks ago, Mom and Dad were driving and doing their thing. And today, on my 46th birthday, we laid them to rest. The grief and sadness is primal and my heart is broken. But if my parent’s legacy and my 46 years of life have taught me anything, it's that heart broken is just code for a heart broken open, and in this openness lies infinite possibilities, love, and resilience.  I've tried to convince myself that this was all part of some master plan that Mom and Dad's souls agreed to before entering this earthly plane. That maybe they decided this is how they would go - together, with my sisters and I by their side. That maybe they wanted to find a way for my sisters and I to spend more time together in our adult lives and come out closer than ever before. That maybe they wanted us to tap into childhood memories, reconnect with friends and loved ones, and listen to their favorite tunes like Dad's fondness of Barry Manilow and Mom's love of anything Motown. Maybe they chose this time of a global pandemic to remind us that despite physical distance it is possible to feel enveloped in so much love, support and appreciation in the midst of the unimaginable. Maybe they wanted everyone to know that a true love story transcends time. Maybe they gave me the most important birthday gift of all, knowing they are at peace and dancing together again, and that is something to celebrate. And maybe they knew we would all be ok, knowing their legacy and eternal light now shines bright in every heart they touched which will serve as an anchor as we ride the inevitable waves of grief that are sure to come. Thank you for my life Mom and Dad. I'll love you forever. Here is to always shining bright, so so bright. ✨💛💛✨
Oh Dad, you always taught us the importance of a g Oh Dad, you always taught us the importance of a good exit strategy and going out on our own terms. And that is exactly what you did. It seems impossible yet poetic that you and Mom are reunited again after just 10 days apart. I’m not sure who I will be without you physically cheering me on, but I know I’ll be ok, because your legacy of love, integrity, wisdom, leadership, community and family lives in my heart and every ounce of my being. I’ll see you in our sunrises and will love you forever. May 27, 1940-July 25, 2020. 💙✨💕 Long-time community leader and businessman Barry Milton Davis passed away on July 25, 2020 joining his wife of 55 years, Karen Davis, who passed on July 15. A Tulsa native, Barry was the oldest son of Elliott and Hannah Davis and spent formative years working at his family’s downtown Tulsa sporting goods store. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, Barry honored his father’s legacy of service during WWII and joined the U.S. Army, serving proudly as an Artillery officer. Over the course his subsequent 50 plus year business career, Barry was at the forefront of the national and regional venture capital industry. As Managing Partner of Davis Tuttle Venture Partners and Davis Venture Partners, Barry invested in and helped nurture a diverse range of innovative companies and entrepreneurs with consistently spectacular results. Barry additionally served as Managing Partner of New Era Group, an energy and natural resources group; and as President and CEO of the Alliance Business Investment Company. A champion for his industry and passionate believer in the transformative power of entrepreneurship, Barry served as National Chairman of the Board of Governors of NASBIC, a national venture capital industry trade association, and was the recipient of the industry’s “Lifetime Achievement Award.” He was a Board member of the National Venture Capital Association; a Founder and Chairman of the Venture Capital Institute; Chairman of the Oklahoma Innovation Institute; and board member of the University of Oklahoma Price College of Business, from which he received the “Distinguished Alumni Award.” (Cont. in comments)

I can’t imagine a world without you but will love you forever. Rest in grace. August 16, 1945-July 15, 2020💔✨💜 Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and colleague Karen Levitt Davis passed away on July 15, 2020. Married for 55 years to the love of her life, Barry Davis, Karen was the heart and soul of her immediate and extended family, a faithful and generous friend, and a powerful force in the Tulsa community. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Karen called Tulsa home for more than 50 years, becoming a well-known champion for progressive community causes and initiatives. Through her extensive work with the Tulsa Community Foundation and the George Kaiser Family Foundation, Karen served as a key voice for equality in education, housing, employment, healthcare and social services in Tulsa. Among many community accomplishments, Karen helped establish a program to fund local LGBTQ services; helped create an emergency relief fund for displaced workers; and helped lead the effort to support victims of Hurricane Katrina in Tulsa. Most notably, Karen was a critical driver and visionary behind Step Up Tulsa, a transformational comprehensive community plan. She was also a generous supporter of major community projects including The Gathering Place and John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park, and proudly served as president of the Junior League of Tulsa. A cherished friend to so many, Karen brought grace, warmth and charm to every gathering. She was widely appreciated and admired not only for her quick wit and caring nature but also her unmatched style. Most importantly, Karen was fiercely committed to her family. She was a matriarch in every way and gave endlessly of herself to provide unconditional love and support. She was an enthusiastic participant in family celebrations, as well as a calming force through challenging times. She could be counted on always to provide warm and wise counsel to her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. (Continued in comments)
Hello friends. I’ve written and re-written this Hello friends. I’ve written and re-written this post so many times I’ve lost count. 🖤 I started by saying how this was a collective awakening for our country and then realized how rooted in white privilege that comment was and that Black people have been living this collective awakening for over 400 hundred years. 🖤 I wrote that in order to be part of the solution to dismantle systemic oppression, we as white people need to first start by looking within to uncover the oppression, disrespect, and dehumanization in our own lives of which we are consciously or unconsciously playing a part, but then realized that was performative allyship. 🖤 I talked about the importance of daily commitment to staying awake individually and as a collective with as much compassion, integrity, love and respect as possible, but then realized this is spiritual bypassing with no acknowledgment of the brutality and loss of Black bodies every single day. 🖤 I watched a video about the devastating impact of the Tulsa Race Massacre, my hometown (google it). It shook me to my core. I quickly justified in my mind that it was ok, our family hadn’t moved to Tulsa yet. But then I realized, that white supremacist act in my community informed my privileged upbringing, period. 🖤 I scrolled through several white friends + influencer Instagram posts as they talked about how hard last week was for them and how they needed to take a break to process the sadness with no regard to how black people must be feeling. I felt sick to my stomach, because that white fragility and tears were simply reflections of my own. 🖤 But I’m posting this anyway. Because this is white privilege and it is inside all of us. Even the liberal minded, entrepreneurial, impact driven, NAACP supporting, resilience training, meditation teaching, woo-woo exploring, mystical seeking, cancer surviving one of us. What I know is different and will be working on likely for the rest of my life, is viewing my everyday actions through this critical lens of awareness around racial disparity and committed to doing better. ✨What If?✨I’m not sure about you, but I thi ✨What If?✨I’m not sure about you, but I think the adrenaline surrounding preparation last week has officially met the reality of acceptance this week which admittedly feels pretty unsettling. And it made me a lil’ curious about perspective. ✨ ✨ What if this experience wasn’t happening to us but for us? What if the fear, angst and uncertainty were catalysts to feel more love, presence, and grace? What if the fact that we are forced inside means that for the first time we actually go inside – to our hearts and souls? What if we acknowledge that adversity is the great equalizer and a reminder that we are more resilient in body, mind, and spirit than we could ever imagine? What if we witnessed that resilience even now, seeing how just two weeks ago, we never would have imagined this as our reality (and that you could homeschool), yet here we are? ✨Social Distancing Tips and Tools✨Hello friend ✨Social Distancing Tips and Tools✨Hello friends. I know these are uncertain times, and trust me, I’m feeling it all along with you. But if I’m being honest, social distancing in the midst of a health crisis AND as a natural introvert (who can certainly enjoy extrovert moments) is kind of my sweet spot. So I’ve reflected on my own “Woo-Woo To Do” I crafted in the early days of my cancer diagnosis and modified it to hopefully provide some super tangible ways to support ourselves and others in the midst of this uncertainty. ✨✨ I’ve compiled 9 tips and some helpful resources. While the primary message is to stay calm, I’m a believer that instead of suppressing what’s going on with a forced feeling of calm, rather meeting the fear and discomfort head on and share how I do this. A bit of a disclaimer, this is for those of us that aren’t in the acute nature of the virus and it isn’t about creating spiritual busy work or discounting the very serious nature of the state we are all in whether impacted by the virus directly or emotionally, but feeling as empowered as we can within this new normal we are all navigating together. 💖7 years💖I had a whole post planned to mark 💖7 years💖I had a whole post planned to mark today. But, last night, after a week away visiting friends, my sisters and a super fulfilling work engagement, I returned home to my alarm sensor subtly beeping. After some trouble shooting, I realized I needed a special lithium battery. So I ran out to Walgreens. And there, standing in line, amidst all the Valentine's Day accoutremonts, I broke down crying. 💖 💖 Yep, that same ugly cry upon first learning of my diagnosis. When I got to the cashier, she very empathetically asked if I was ok, and I simply responded through my sniffled tears, "these batteries are just really expensive." And then I laughed and my smile, which I realize has become my anchor in the midst of the emotive moments when so much seems out of my control, is always there to remind me that the heart-breaking and the heart-opening moments are simply designed to coexist and remind us of the divine grace and love we each possess. And every day is a practice of anchoring it and asking for signs of its existence. For me, one of these signs is when my smile finds me, even in those darkest moments. 💖 💖 I remember when @flintsparks took me through a visualization after I completed treatment where he helped me imagine that there would be a day when cancer wouldn't be the sole focus of my life. But kindness and compassion towards myself and others would be key. That I wouldn't even imagine the possibilities ahead. And here we are, with so many of those unimagined possibilities coming to fruition, and I feel so delighted and grateful. And while cancer is still a part of my life as I witness so many loved ones going through their own journeys of love and loss, I remind myself that this undenying presence of love, grace, guidance, and support is always available to us, we simply have to ask. 💖 💖 So grateful for all the love and support over these past 7 years. It’s no surprise his final walk home took place just following the winter solstice and on the first night of Chanukah, the Festival of Lights. When I first discovered his teachings so many years ago, my heart cracked wide open to a sacred knowingness and unconditional love that’s been guiding me ever since (even if I wasn’t always conscious of it.😏). Oh goodness, the upcoming winter solstice has me f Oh goodness, the upcoming winter solstice has me feeling all reflective. And I'm becoming aware that when I'm feeling reflective, I bake challah, a whole lotta challah. While I do love the final product of a house that smells like fresh baked bread and the joy I feel as I prepare to gift it to loved ones, the best part of making the challah is the in-between, the first rise (photo 3). 💙 💙 Read more about my year-end reflections (and recipe) through the lens of a challah baking metaphor. I love when #gratitude gets some extra air time ov I love when #gratitude gets some extra air time over the holidays and am always hopeful it inspires people to invite gratitude into their day-to-day. For me, daily gratitude is my go to anchor, especially when the uncertainty and sh*t show of life makes a surprise visit. Once I learned that gratitude wasn't necessarily about a glazed positivity, but rather presence to all the ways life is actually working in our favor, it was a game changer. While there are so many ways to practice gratitude, I can't imagine a better way than with #mrrogers . If we all took 10 seconds as he invites us in this simple but powerful practice, I'm pretty sure we can't even imagine the ripples of goodness that will make their presence known.
